Recycling records for hotels
Last reviewed 25 October 2026
A hotel in England usually runs a kitchen, guest rooms, a bar and housekeeping. Food waste from the kitchen and from plates is collected separately. Bottles and cans may travel together. Paper and card, including cardboard from deliveries, stay separate unless a written assessment is on file. Guest rooms do not create a different rule.
Match the bins to the operation
Record the hotel as a site. A separate restaurant with its own bins can be its own site. Breakfast waste, kitchen prep and plate waste can share one food collection if one collector takes them all. Housekeeping general waste stays in general waste. Mini-bar bottles and cans are dry recycling.
The England date uses the hotel business’s full-time-equivalent staff, not the number of rooms or guests. A landlord or a hotel group may arrange the bins. Keep their written confirmation of each stream.
Hotels outside England
A hotel in Wales presents the Welsh streams, including glass on its own, and food waste when the premises produce 5kg or more in seven days. A hotel in Scotland is a food business if it prepares or sells food, so the 5kg-a-week food duty and the rural exemption both need a look. A hotel in Northern Ireland that is a food business uses the 5kg food-waste duty, and must not put food waste to sewer.
If the site is in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, read the guide for that nation. The streams and dates there are different. The free check on SortProof uses the England rules.
In short
- List the hotel, and any restaurant with different bins, as sites.
- Keep kitchen and plate waste in the food collection.
- Keep cardboard out of the bottle recycling unless a written assessment is on file.
- File the contract or the group’s written confirmation.
- If the hotel is not in England, use the nation guide before you rely on this stream list.
Questions
Do guests have to sort waste in the room?
The duty is on the workplace that presents the waste for collection. Room bins can be sorted by staff before the collection. The collection itself still has to keep the streams apart.
Does the number of bedrooms set the England date?
No. The date uses full-time-equivalent staff of the whole business.
